Some twenty-nine infantry regiments together with support troops and technical corps served in the Australian Colonies between 1788 and 1870. Their stay varied from a few months to twelve years; many of their members elected to remain in Australia as settlers when their corps or regiments moved on to serve elsewhere. Curators of army museums, military librarians, local historians from all parts of Australia and from places as widely scattered as England and Norfolk Island have all helped to locate material for this book. Items uncovered include contemporary prints and photographs of uniforms, buttons, belt plates, shako plates and other special distinctions. There is included also a list of the title of the various regiments during their service in Australia or New Zealand; the regimental nick-names; the regimental mottoes; the facing colours and officers' lace and details of the head dress that was worn. The Roll of Officers Commanding includes only those who were in command for an appreciable period of time. Those appointed on a temporary basis, relieving, pending the arrival of a newly appointed officer, are not included. This work will now be the definitive reference for all involved in activities that call for military costumes of the colonial period and the thousands of Australians and New Zealanders who can include a British soldier among their forbears.
